Bat flies (Diptera: Streblidae, Nycteribiidae) and mites (Acari) associated with bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in a high-altitude region in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: A total of 71 bat flies belonging to families Nycteribiidae and Streblidae, and 37 mites were collected on 12 species of bats (Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae) from the Chapada do Abanador (Minas Gerais, Brazil), between July 2009 and April 2010. Two new occurrences of ectoparasites were recorded on Histiotus velatus (bat fly Basilia producta) and on Carollia perspicillata (mite Parichoronyssus bakeri). Five new occurrences were recorded for the state of Minas Gerais, increasing the range for bat flies Ana… Show more

“…In RVSMJ, the dominance of Trichobius joblingi can be explained by the fact that the parasite is associated primarily with the host C. perspicillata (Graciolli and Carvalho 2001;Bertola et al 2005;Esbérard et al 2012), which represented 38.70 % of captures in this area. This association has often been recorded in the other areas of Atlantic forest (Prevedello et al 2005;Moras et al 2013;Soares et al 2013).…”

“…In Brazil, most studies of this host relationship relate to the mid-west, south-east, and south of the country (e.g., Graciolli and Carvalho 2001;Bertola et al 2005;Rui and Graciolli 2005;Teixeira and Ferreira 2010;Dos Santos et al 2013;França et al 2013;Moras et al 2013;Lourenço et al 2014;Figueiredo et al 2015;Vasconcelos et al 2016). In the northeast of the country, this parasitism was studied in Bahia (Rios et al 2008;Esbérard et al 2012), Maranhão Santos et al 2009;Dos Santos et al 2013), and Pernambuco (Soares et al 2013).…”

“…Comments: Its primary host is Anoura geoffroyi Gray, 1838(WENZEL, 1976CARVALHO, 2001), with records from the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest for this host and A. caudifer (GRACIOLLI; CARVALHO, 2001;COELHO, 2001;RUI, 2001;BERTOLA et al, 2005;GRACIOLLI et al, 2010;MORAS et al, 2013). This is the first occurrence of this bat fly on species of Lonchophylla Thomas, (Olfers, 1818).…”

“…Studies on the occurrence of Spinturnicids in Brazil have been conducted with bats collected in the capital city of Brasília, in regions of the Cerrado (GETTINGER & GRIBEL, 1989), in Atlantic forest areas in the states of Minas Gerais (AZEVEDO et al, 2002;MORAS et al, 2013), Pernambuco (DANTAS-TORRES et al, 2009), Rio Grande do Sul (SILVA et al, 2009), Rio de Janeiro (ALMEIDA et al, 2011), and in the Pantanal region, state of Mato Grosso do Sul (SILVA & GRACIOLLI, 2013), besides of Confalonieri dissertation (1976) that present a biometric study of P. iheringi and P. ojastii. In the present paper, it is reported the diversity and distribution of ectoparasitic Spinturnicidae species found in surveys conducted in the Pantanal region in the state of Mato Grosso and in the Caatinga region in the state of Ceará.…”
