Battery Recycling Technologies: Recycling Waste Lithium Ion Batteries with the Impact on the Environment In-View

Abstract: This survey is to review the advancement recorded so far in the lithium-ion battery recycling technologies in compliance with environmental laws. Amongst many of the technologies used to date, the best is the use of simple but scale-up dissolution technology involving non-toxic suitable organic solvents that can effectively dissolve toxic binder, PVdF in battery to avoid much pollution. Pollution through the hydrolysis of LiPF 6 from the lithium-ion battery can also be minimized through conversion to useful co… Show more

“…Bezpośredni mechanizm procesu polega na mineralnej bio-oksydacji, w wyniku czego komórki mikroorganizmów mogą utlenić nierozpuszczalne w wodzie siarczki metali do rozpuszczalnych siarczanów z zastosowaniem elektronów pochodzących bezpośrednio z materiałów. W celu zwiększenia efektywności, zalecane jest prowadzenie metody w środowisku bogatym w substancje odżywcze dla bakterii [1,8].…”

“…Consequently, recycling Lithium-ion batteries to recover useful metals was subjected to European goals from the European Union [10]. Although spent Lithium-ion batteries might be classified as non-environmentally hazardous wastes unlike other batteries containing Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) or Mercury (Hg), the presence of flammable and toxic elements makes their safe disposal a severe issue [11].…”

“…Moreover, the N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) commonly used as a solvent for the fabrication of active electrode materials (cathode and anode) has been classified as toxic. Therefore this is potentially negative for the environment, causing human exposure to environmental hazards [11]- [13]. Hence, the technical processes of recycling Lithium-ion batteries are of immense importance for waste management sustainability.…”
