Battery Storage Integration in Voltage Unbalance and Overvoltage Mitigation Control Strategies and Its Impact on the Power Quality

Abstract: The increased utilisation of distributed renewable energy sources in low voltage grids leads to power quality problems such as overvoltages and voltage unbalance. This imposes challenges to the distribution system operators to maintain the power quality in their grids. To overcome these issues, energy storage systems could be integrated together with the distributed energy resources and the stored energy could be used when needed to better improve power quality and achieve better grid performance. However, int… Show more

“…The intermittent nature of some RES is a hindrance for high penetration of them in the electrical grid. That is, the erratic wind and solar output power, which is the result of wind speed and solar irradiance variations, causes some challenges for power system reliability and stability such as overvoltages and voltage unbalances occur in the distribution network [30,31].…”

“…The increased utilisation of distributed renewable energy sources in low voltage grids leads to power quality problems such as overvoltages and voltage unbalance. For example, in [130], an energy storage system is combined with the classical positive-sequence control strategy and the threephase damping control strategy to provide insight into power quality. A transversal review between smart grid and smart city framework is given in [131].…”

“…It can also cause additional losses in the substation transformer if used in Δ-Y configuration. Additionally, it is shown in [11,30,32] and [33] that overvoltages can be avoided by mitigating the zerosequence current which results in less curtailed power and allows for an increased penetration of DRES.…”
