Simple SummaryDue to the extensive marbling of its beef, Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) has continuously gained popularity and has become a mainstay in South Korea’s animal industry. In any beef cattle production system, reproductive performance is one of the main economic aspects taken into consideration. Therefore, genetic parameter estimates are necessary to obtain indices in order to maximize the response to selection, which in turn could lead to higher profitability. To date, knowledge on the genetic parameters for reproductive traits in Hanwoo cattle is still limited. Therefore, this study estimated the variance components, heritability, phenotypic, and genetic correlations of age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), days open (DO), and gestation length (GL) of Hanwoo cattle. This was done using single-trait and multi-trait animal models. Results revealed the low heritability estimates for AFC, CI, DO, and GL in both single-trait and multi-trait models, which indicated the probable slow response of these traits due to direct selection. Moreover, phenotypic and genetic correlations varied from low to high among the reproductive traits of interest. Nevertheless, heritability estimates and genetic correlations shown in this study will prove to be vital as initial estimates are considered in the genetic improvement program of Hanwoo cattle.AbstractGenetic parameters for the reproductive traits of Hanwoo cattle were estimated using data obtained from 15,355 cows in 92 herds across South Korea, which were inseminated from May 1997 to July 2016. An “average information” restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure that fit in single-trait and multi-trait animal models was used to estimate the variance components of age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), days open (DO), and gestation length (GL). Results showed the low estimates of heritability for all reproductive traits from both single-trait and multi-trait models. Estimates of heritability for AFC were 0.08 and 0.10 with single-trait and multi-trait models, respectively, while the estimates of heritability using the same animal models ranged from 0.01 to 0.07, 0.01 to 0.09, and 0.10 to 0.16 for CI, DO, and GL, accordingly. While AFC showed positive genetic correlations of 0.52 and 0.46 with CI and DO, respectively, the estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations of GL with AFC were close to zero. Moreover, phenotypic correlations of GL with CI and DO were also close to zero; however, the corresponding genetic correlations were 0.13 and –0.38 for CI and DO, respectively. These estimated variance components and genetic correlations for reproductive traits can be utilized for genetic improvement programs of Hanwoo cattle.

Nellore is the main cattle breed used in Brazil, being the largest commercial herd in the world. Beyond the importance of male reproductive efficiency for farm profit, the use of reproductive techniques, mainly artificial insemination, turns the evaluation of male reproductive traits even more important. Estimation of genetic parameters increases the knowledge on traits variances and allows envisaging the possibility of the inclusion of new traits as selection criterion. Genetic parameters for fifteen traits that can be classified as testicular biometry or physical and morphological semen traits were estimated for a Nellore bull population ranging from 18 to 36 months.Single-trait and bi-trait animal models were used for (co)variance components estimation. The contemporary group was considered as fixed effect and age at measurement as covariable. Scrotal circumference presented heritability of 0.47 ± 0.12. This value is similar to the heritabilities found for all testicular biometry traits (0.34-0.48).Sperm progressive motility, which has a direct effect on bull fertility, presented low heritability (0.07 ± 0.08). Major and total sperm defects presented moderate to high heritabilities (0.49 ± 0.18 and 0.39 ± 0.15, respectively), indicating that great genetic gain can be obtained through selection against sperm defects. High and positive genetic correlations were observed among testicular biometry traits, which also presented favourable genetic correlations with physical and morphological traits of the semen with magnitude ranging from high to low. Scrotal circumference presented moderate to high and favourable genetic correlations with sperm progressive motility, sperm turbulence, major sperm defects and total sperm defects. Thus, the selection for scrotal circumference results in favourable correlated genetic response for semen quality. The results show that the use of scrotal circumference as reference trait for bull fertility is appropriate, since it presents high heritability and favourable genetic correlation with semen quality. The aim was to identify predictive traits of relatively easy measurement and which can be recorded early in life (age at first conception - AFCo), besides estimating its genetic correlations with growth and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. Age at first conception was considered the age at which the female had the first positive diagnosis for pregnancy. The estimation of (co)variance components and genetic parameters was performed using a linear animal model in two-trait analysis. The estimates of heritability were moderate, enabling genetic selection for growth-, carcass-, and sexual precocityrelated traits. The genetic correlation obtained between AFCo and age at first calving (AFCa) was high (0.88), indicating the feasibility of using AFCo as a selection criterion for early calving heifers. Genetic correlation estimates between AFCo and AFCa with weight at 120, 210, 365, and 450 days of age and carcass traits were moderate and negative (-0.33 to -0.62). Thus, genetic selection for animals with early AFCo and AFCa would enhance carcass yield, fat deposition, and growth performance, despite not affecting birth weight or daily weight gain. The results of this study encourage the use of AFCo in Nellore cattle since this trait displayed enough genetic variability in Nellore cattle, and can be used as selection criteria to improve sexual precocity. When the objective of genetic selection is to increase heifer sexual precocity, we could use the first trait as a criterion, as the measurement of this trait occurs at a lower AFCa.
