Be Too Kind to a Woman, She’ll Feel Incompetent: Benevolent Sexism Shifts Self-construal and Autobiographical Memories Toward Incompetence

Abstract: The present study investigated how benevolent (BS) and hostile sexism (HS) shift women's self-construal and autobiographical memory. Belgian undergraduates (only women, N=45, mean age=21.8) were confronted either by BS, HS or neutral comments in the context of a job interview. After performing a cognitive task, participants reported the intrusive thoughts that came to their mind during the task. Later, autobiographical memory for self-incompetence was assessed. Performance response latencies were slower after … Show more

“…For example, Shepherd et al (2011) manipulated whether female participants witnessed a specific type of benevolently sexist act or not (i.e., male confederate offering and taking it upon himself to carry a heavy box for a female confederate). The particular phrase employed in this research, ÒIÕll get that for you,Ó communicates the chivalrous and paternalistic attitude entrenched in benevolently sexist ideology that women may find especially seductive (Cikara, Lee, Fiske, & Glick, 2009), although it simultaneously communicates and activates the threat of incompetence (Dardenne, Dumont, & Bollier, 2007;Dumont, Sarlet, & Dardenne, 2010). Indeed, Shepherd et al found that women who witnessed an act of benevolent sexism reported higher levels of self-surveillance and body shame compared to women who did not.…”

“…Rezultati teh raziskav (npr. Dardenne, Dumont in Bollier, 2007;Dumont, Sarlet in Dardenne, 2010) kažejo, da dobronamerni seksizem vpliva na dosežke žensk na kognitivnih nalogah prek vsiljenih misli o lastni nekompetentnosti. Izpostavljenost dobronamernemu seksizmu namreč olajša dostop do avtobiografskih spominov o nekompetentnosti (Barreto, Ellemers, Piebinga in Moya, 2010).…”
