Bear dentine aspartic acid racemization analysis: a proxy for the dating of Pleistocene cave infills

Abstract: A high correlation between chronometric determinations based on aspartic acid racemization ratios and radioactive dating methods is described from samples of cave bear (Ursus deningeri and Ursus spelaeus) dentine. For samples from a very restrictive environment, as deep cave bear sites are (in view of their highly stable geochemical and thermal history), an age calculation algorithm was obtained. It has been found that there is a very close relationship between collagen preservation, from total aspartic acid i… Show more

“…The high coefficients of variation shown by archaeological sites and tissues (Table 2) are similar to those reported for historical (Carolan et al 1997;Gilbert et al 2005;Kolman and Tuross 2000) and pre-historical human remains (Serre et al 2004), and cave bears (Ursus deningeri/spelaeus) (Torres et al 2002).…”

“…The detection was done by a NPD detector at 300ºC and the PEAK96 HP software was used to integrate the peak areas. The induced Asp racemization background of the procedure used was estimated in 0.04-0.05, much lower than the actual values measured on recent dentine samples (Torres et al 2002).…”
