A. Mü tze OVE Today, a search for bearing currents in databases on engineering literature may return hundreds or (depending on the database and any additional filter used) thousands of hits. The degree to which the identified papers address the bearing current topic itself varies. Often, the term is used (as it is common with key words) to reflect the wider context and the topicality of the work that is presented, e.g. a discussion of a new filter topology. Without claiming completeness, this paper provides an overview of the various aspects that have been addressed in literature related to the bearing current topic.Tausende von Treffern: Ü ber umrichterbedingte Lagerströ me, zugehö rige Themen und die Literatur.Eine einfache Suche unter dem Stichwort "Lagerströ me in einer Datenbank fü r Ingenieursliteratur kann zu hunderten oder (abhä ngig von der Datenbank und zusä tzlich verwendeten Filtern) tausenden von Treffern fü hren. Das Ausmaß, mit dem die identifizierten Publikationen das Lagerstromthema behandeln, variiert. Oft wird der Begriff (wie es fü r Stichwö rter ü blich ist) verwendet, um den weiteren Zusammenhang und die Aktualitä t des in der jeweiligen Publikation behandelten Themas, wie z. B. eine neue Filtertopologie, widerzuspiegeln. “…These bearing currents can be produced by high motor frame voltage due to common mode current, high frequency axial shaft voltage due to circumferential magnetic flux around the motor shaft, the coupling of common mode voltage via the bearing capacitances [124]. It is possible to prevent the discharge of current through the bearings by using insulation in the bearings or by creating alternative paths for the current like using a grounding brush [124], [125]. Furthermore, converter design to minimise the common mode voltage can also help reduce bearing currents [126].…”

Abstract-Availability is an important factor to be considered when designing wind turbine generator systems. The quest for increased availability is based on the following five design approaches -design for component reliability, active control for reliability, design for fault tolerance, prognostics, and design for maintainability. This paper reviews methods focussing on the first three, i.e. component reliability, active control, and fault tolerance. The paper further identifies some promising directions for further research.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to contribute toward the modelling of the microscopic interaction between high-frequency discharge bearing currents and rolling element bearings in the contact zone. It also aims to develop a reduced model that can serve as a starting point for further developments. Design/methodology/approach -The complexity of an ideal comprehensive model is identified and analysed. Based thereon, a reduced model is developed. Findings -The true system is highly complex and cannot be solved in a single-step approach. The proposed reduced model allows the explanation of the melting of the bearing surfaces under the influence of the high-frequency currents. It also provides a starting point for the development of an extended model. Research limitations/implications -The model excludes the dynamic rolling movement of the bearing. The development of the frosting and fluting observed on the bearing running surfaces can only be explained in parts. Practical implications -The melting of the bearing race surface can be modelled and thereby explained. The proposed model forms a good basis for further work toward an extended model to explain the high-frequency bearing current bearing damage mechanism. Originality/value -The paper offers a method to model the microscopic interaction between high-frequency discharge bearing currents and rolling element bearings in the contact zone. This phenomenon has not yet been modelled to this extent. Such a model -and the understanding brought forth from it -allows the reduction in the cost for safe operation of modern variable speed drive systems.
