Bee functional traits and their relationship to pollination services depend on many factors: A meta‐regression analysis

Abstract: Understanding relationships between organisms and the ecosystem services they provide is crucial for predicting the impacts of continued biodiversity changes. Functional traits of organisms can affect ecosystem properties and are thus increasingly used to predict long‐term ecosystem functioning. Bees are ideal taxa for using functional approaches given their role in pollination for many plant species and wide diversity of traits. Although distributions of bee functional traits are being documented in the liter… Show more

“…We later removed these morphospecies from analyses because we could not definitively assign values for all traits. We chose eight common bee ecological and functional traits that are known to respond to forest management or have been studied as functional traits in the bee literature (body size, tongue length, flight phenology, scopa number, lecty, sociality, nesting strategy and parasitism) (Chase et al, 2023a(Chase et al, , 2023bRoberts et al, 2017;Taki et al, 2013). All species were assigned a trait value as described below (see Table S2 for values).…”

“…Furthermore, they play a significant role in insect conservation by functioning as ecological indicators [ 10 , 14 , 17 , 22 , 23 ]. Thus, gaining insights into insect biodiversity, spatiotemporal variations, and the influences of environmental factors remain a paramount ecological challenge [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Certain ecological studies on Mecoptera have highlighted the pivotal roles of precipitation and elevation in determining species assemblages.…”
