This paper aims to describe how the form of communication is used by middle and lower class civil society in Indonesia to respond to the government's call when it was first ordered to lock down when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit in 2020 ago. This research was designed qualitatively and conducted through several stages of research. They were observation, data collection, data display and analysis, and conclusion. At the observation stage, researchers observed the linguistic phenomena appearing in various villages in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). DIY was independently performing a lockdown although the Indonesian government did not instruct to do that as what other regions did. The second step was data collection. The main source of the data was banners consisting of language content themed the lockdown as the main data. From the documented banners and transcription, the research came into the next stage of method that was data display and analysis. The language contents were classified into some categorizations of illocutionary acts through pragmatics approach.

Veronika Decides to Die is one of Paulo Coelho's best-selling novels, through which he describes in details what is happening inside the wall of mental hospitals. The novel was first published in 1998. The researcher selects this novel as there is no study has been done so far in analyzing Veronika Decides to Die from a semiotics viewpoint. There are two main Semiotics theories, one is represented by the Swiss linguistics Ferdinand de Saussure and another is represented by the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce's triadic theory of icon, index and symbol. The latter has been selected as a tool in answering the research question of: What are the main signs in Coelho's Veronika Decides to Die?

Suicide, one of the most common problems in modern and postmodern societies, is a socio-psychiatric phenomenon existing in every society or culture. In the past, the concept of suicide was only included in psychiatry; however, with an increasing awareness of some social factors behind suicide, it is now being tackled from a sociological perspective. In the second half of the twentieth century, changes in relationships and lifestyles of modern society begin to be more apparent in postmodern culture. Expectations for the future dramatically decline in this period. The notion of absolute nothingness is now clearly seen in every aspect of human life. All these elements affect humans' inner peace and cause physical, mental, and psychological deterioration. Veronika Decides to Die, written by Paulo Coelho in 1998, deals with the psychological journey of a young woman who loses her motivation to live and attempts suicide. Coelho, based on his own life experiences, reveals the psychological transformations of the main character Veronika, whose suicide attempt fails. Therefore, both the conflict between life and death and the conflict between self and society are highly significant to analyze some possible reasons for the suicidal behaviors of Veronika. In this respect, this paper intends to analyze the novel from the psychoanalytic perspective of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. The psychological and environmental motivation behind the suicide attempt will be clarified with Freudian psychology theory of life (Eros) and death (Thanatos) instincts, and their relation to id, ego, and superego.
