Behavior of GPS‐derived precipitable water vapor in the mountain lee after the passage of a cold front

Abstract: [1] A mesoscale precipitation system generated half a day after a cold front passed over the Kanto Plain in the lee of the Chubu Mountains, Japan. The behavior of precipitable water vapor (PWV) associated with this precipitation system was investigated by the use of a dense Global Positioning System (GPS) network. After the passage of the cold front, a highlevel PWV zone was persistently observed over the Kanto Plain. The mesoscale precipitation system was induced in this zone. A numerical study indicated that… Show more

“…The modified RAMS was developed at the Terrestrial Environment Research Center (TERC) of University of Tsukuba, Japan (TERC‐RAMS). It has been used in many previous studies [e.g., Yoshikane et al , 2001; Okamura and Kimura , 2003; Sato and Kimura , 2003]. Features of the model and the settings in the present study are listed in Table 1.…”

“…1); thus, a cold front produces complex precipitation patterns as it passes over the central Japanese mainland (Fig. 2) (e.g., Yamamoto 1984;Fujibe 1989;Mannoji and Kurihara 1993;Okamura and Kimura 2003;Seino et al 2003). Such topography adds to the difficulty of accurately forecasting weather over the Kanto area, including the Tokyo metropolis.…”

“…The wind vectors in Figure 6 were reproduced by numerical simulations using a regional model, RAMS (the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System; Pielke et al, 1992). A modified RAMS presented by Sato and Kimura (2003) and Okamura and Kimura (2003) was used in the present study. The features of the model and the settings in this study are listed in Table I.…”
