The objective of this research is to assess of heavy metal pollution and its fractionation in sediments of the Sonora and Bacanuchi rivers located in arid and semi-arid climates. Sediment quality guidelines (U.S. EPA; SQGs), enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) were used to evaluate the extent of heavy metal pollution. Total heavy metals concentrations for both rivers were as follows (mg/kg): Cd (< BDL), Cu (2 -103), Cr (5 -27), Fe (9156 -34343), Mn (114 -573), , . According to sediment quality guidelines Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn were classified as moderately polluted, while Cu and Fe were strongly polluted. Metals predominated in geochemical fractions in the following order: Residual> Fe/Mn oxides> interchangeable> organic matter. A significant proportion of heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) was associated to the nonresidual fraction, proving that those metals have greater mobility and may be bioavailable to living beings. EF values indicated that Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn come from enriched sources due to anthropogenic activities. In both rivers, Igeo values indicated non contaminated or moderately contaminated levels in the sediments. The present study confirms an anthropogenic source of heavy metals, which could be a danger for biota in the surrounding areas, due to its mobility and bioavailability. Therefore, it is recommended to monitor water and sediment quality periodically.

Mining has led to severe environmental pollution in countries with exhaustive mining production and inadequate industrial waste regulation. Microorganisms in contaminated sites, like mine tailings, have adapted to high concentrations of heavy metals, developing the capacity of reducing or removing them from these environments. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly characterize bacteria present in these sites to find different ways of bioremediation. In this regard, in this study, an enrichment and isolation procedure were performed to isolate bacteria with lower nutritional requirements and high tolerance to Cu(II) and Fe(II) from two Sonoran River basin mining tails. Two Staphylococcus species and a Microbacterium ginsengisoli strain were isolated and identified from the San Felipe de Jesús mining tail. Also, three strains were isolated from the Nacozari de García mining tail: Burkholderia cenocepacia, Sphingomonas sp. and Staphylococcus warneri. Significant microbiological differences were found between the two sites. All these species exhibited tolerance up to 300 mg/L for Cu (II)–Fe (II) solutions, indicating their capacity to grow in these conditions. Moreover, a consortium of isolated bacteria was immobilized in two different biocomposites and the biocomposite with larger pore size achieved greater bacterial immobilization showcasing the potential of these bacteria in biotechnological applications.

Understanding the baseline geochemistry of stream waters in a prospective mining area is the key to responsible life-of-mine planning and the protection of local rivers. This can be sometimes challenging due to the presence of abandoned mines, small scale mining, and geogenic sources of metals in the same area, particularly under a tropical humid climates with rivers carrying intermittently high solid loads. This study is focused on the Pula Bato, Danlag, Altayan, and Taplan Rivers in such a climatic setting in Philippines. The rivers are located in the vicinity of the Tampakan ore deposit. It was observed that elemental concentrations in water samples from Pula Bato were generally higher when compared to concentrations from Danlag, Taplan, and Altayan samples. In particular, SO, TDS, Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn present considerably higher concentrations in the water samples from Pula Bato. It was shown that water quality of Pula Bato is influenced by the natural weathering of sulphide minerals which is further enhanced by the small scale mining activities and old underground workings. The mining effects on the water of Pula Bato River were not apparent in the water of the Altayan due to the possible dilution of the uncontaminated water from Danlag River and sorption processes occurring during the course of contaminants transport. The geochemical indicators and water distinctions can be used in future for catchment-scale geochemical balance modelling.
