Bench‐scale testing of high‐temperature desulfurization sorbents

Abstract: Extrudutes of regenerable mixed-metal oxide sorbents including zinc ferrite, copper-modijied zinc ferrite, and zinc titanate were prepared and tested for their potential to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from coal gasifier gas in a high-temperature high-pressure (HTHP) jixed-bed reactor. Reductions in H2S concentration from >10,000 parts per million b y volume (ppmv) to < I to 50 ppmv were achieved depending on sorbent, reactor temperature, and steam concentration. Zinc ferrite showed no apparent loss in capaci… Show more

“…Zinc metal evaporation becomes significant if desulfurization above 732 °C (1350 °F) under dry conditions (i.e., low H 2 O content in the coal gas) is desired. 68 Since the GE moving-bed system carries out H 2 S absorption around 482-538 °C (900-1000 °F), zinc metal evaporation is not a concern. When regeneration is carried out under dry conditions in the presence of diluted air, the following reaction takes place: …”

“…45 " 47 Copper chromite (CuCri0 4 ), a material that has the lowest reducibility of all the copper-oxide containing compounds, was specifically developed to address the copper oxide reduction issue. 52 ' 53 Other developments include investigations into manganese and rare earth based materials that are especially suitable for high temperatures.…”
