The just-in-sequence inventory strategy, as an important part of the supply chain solutions in the automotive industry, is based on feedback information from the manufacturer. The performance, reliability, availability and cost efficiency are based on the parameters of the members of the supply chain process. To increase the return on assets (ROA) of the manufacturer, the optimization of the supply process is unavoidable. Within the frame of this paper, the authors describe a flower pollination algorithm-based heuristic optimization model of just-in-sequence supply focusing on sustainability aspects, including fuel consumption and emission. After a systematic literature review, this paper introduces a mathematical model of just-in-sequence supply, including assignment and scheduling problems. The objective of the model is to determine the optimal assignment and schedule for each sequence to minimize the total purchasing cost, which allows improving cost efficiency while sustainability aspects are taken into consideration. Next, a flower pollination algorithm-based heuristic is described, whose performance is validated with different benchmark functions. The scenario analysis validates the model and evaluates its performance to increase cost-efficiency in just-in-sequence solutions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the impact of the recent recession on both the automotive manufacturer as well as their suppliers. The research aims to identify if the impact has been the same at each of the organizations, or if there has been a difference. Design/methodology/approach This paper carries out a case study research, into the need for suppliers to increase their responsiveness following recession and the impact this has had on supplier relations. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were carried out at the vehicle manufacturer with two members of production control staff from VMUK plus seven production control staff at seven tier 1 suppliers to VMUK. Findings Supply chains have been enhanced through an increased level of responsiveness, following the economic downturn and supplier relations have had a positive impact post-recession. Research limitations/implications Literature argues that competitive advantage can be achieved through responsiveness, and that responsiveness is critical during a period of volatility and market uncertainty. Furthermore, literature also argues that competitive advantage can be achieved through positive supplier relations. This study investigates both of these arguments. Originality/value This study concludes that the positive supplier relations offer a competitive advantage when there is no cost advantage to be found elsewhere. Furthermore, this study concludes that as a direct impact of the recession, supplier relations have improved within the case studies investigated.

Purpose This research enlarges the debate on the operations management strategies pursued by manufacturing companies. The purpose of this paper is to focus on issues concerning servitisation and customisation, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and Lean-agile, supply chain orchestration, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Lean for design management. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire of eight questions which stemmed from a literature review was completed by 152 senior operations managers from 120 large European manufacturing companies. Responses were scaled from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The results were tested for reliability using Cronbach’s α test. The questions were tested through a one-sample t-test. Findings The 152 respondents consider servitisation and standardisation to be a trade-off. They consider integration of ERP strategies with Lean and agile systems and customised products/processes to be difficult. Furthermore, suppliers’ orchestration is considered not that suitable for manufacturing companies and suppliers’ CSR performance measurement excessive. By contrast, a CSR internal performance measurement is helpful for increasing sales. The respondents also indicate that there is a lack of Lean tools for design and development processes and Six Sigma is the only strategy for improving quality performance in design and development processes. Research limitations/implications The findings are applicable only to the manufacturing sector. The findings of this research indicate many avenues of research for scholars. Practical implications The findings can be very useful for manufacturing operations managers deciding their future strategies on operations. Originality/value Findings related to servitisation and customisation, ERP and Lean-agile, supply orchestration for manufacturing companies and Lean and agile for product design are original and open a valuable debate.
