Benfotiamine Ameliorates High Carbohydrate Diet-Induced Hepatic Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Apoptosis in Megalobrama Amblycephala

Abstract: Background: The impairment of immunity induced by high-carbohydrate diet is closely associated with the development of glucose metabolic disorders. In the study of diabetes, benfotiamine can prevent β-cell dysfunction by inhibiting inflammation, thereby improving insulin resistance. However, information regarding the effects of this substance on aquatic animals is extremely scarce. Methods: A 12-week nutritional research was conducted to evaluate the influences of benfotiamine on the growth performance, oxidati… Show more

“…In the livers of largemouth bass, both activities and gene expression of an antioxidant enzyme CAT decreased significantly in HS group compared with LS group, indicating that the body's ability to scavenge free radicals is weakened. Similar results, were also obtained in black carp (Wu et al, 2016) and Megalobrama amblycephala (Xu et al, 2021; Xu, et al, 2019). MDA is a natural product of lipid oxidation.…”

“…In this study, activities of plasma AST were significantly higher in HS group than those in LS group. The increased AST activities were also observed in Megalobrama amblycephala (Xu et al, 2021) fed with high‐carbohydrate diets. Therefore, the results inferred that high‐carbohydrate diets may lead to liver damage in largemouth bass.…”
