“…In contrast, muddy sand bottoms may be suitable habitats for both suspension feeders and deposit feeders. Similar to our findings, former studies have shown that muddy sand substrates are favorable for the survival of C. fluminea and N. oligobranchia in other large shallow lakes in the Yangtze River Basin, e.g., Lakes Taihu (Cai et al, 2012a) and Hongze (Zhang et al, 2012). We did not find an obvious relationship between water quality and macrozoobenthic assemblages in a preliminary redundancy analysis (RDA), with no environmental variables were selected by forward selection (Monte Carlo estimation of 4999 permutations, p < 0.05).…”

“…The complex variation patterns of macrozoobenthic assemblages may be attributable to the great environmental heterogeneity in Lake Taihu. Though nutrient enrichment was the most noteworthy change in Lake Taihu, the responses of macrozoobenthos to trophic state are likely to be direct and modified by the influence of other factors such as wind-wave disturbance and macrophytes (Cai et al 2012a), which were the most typical features of the Open Lake and the East Bay, respectively. These two factors may counteract the effects of nutrient enrichment on benthic communities.…”

“…To our knowledge, the first detailed work was in 1987À1988 (Huang 2001), during which four comprehensive investigations were conducted in the whole lake and a total of 59 taxa were recorded. The results of Cai et al (2011Cai et al ( , 2012a and Ji et al (2012) showed that only about 40 taxa were recorded and macrozoobenthic assemblages differed significantly among habitats and different lake parts. Cai et al (2012b) also found that the present benthic community in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu has simplified substantially compared to communities in 1994.…”
