Berberine from Argemone mexicana L exhibits a broadspectrum antibacterial activity

Abstract: The Argemone mexicana L, commonly found on desolate land in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra state, India, has been used for treating oral cavity infections. We sought to investigate the antimicrobial potential of A. mexicana L. In this study, cold aqueous and methanolic extracts were prepared from the A. mexicana L leaves. These extracts were tested for their antibacterial activities against selected bacterial isolates. The antibacterial activity and MICs were tested using the agar well diffusion method a… Show more

“…Furthermore, the bacterial community was driven away from the Nor group along PC1 and was closer to the Nor group along PC2 in the Sta + BBR group in comparison to the BBR group (Figure d). Thus, both berberine alone and berberine with stachyose reduced the diversity and richness of microbiota, which may mainly result from the broad antibacterial action of berberine (More et al, ), which is only minimally reversed by the prebiotic stachyose. No significant differences were found between the BBR and Sta + BBR groups.…”

“…(Berberidaceae), has been reported to exert many therapeutic effects, including anti‐diabetes, lipid‐lowering, and anti‐cancer. Currently, berberine is primarily obtained by chemical synthesis and is used in China in the treatment of diarrhea for its effects on intestines and its antibacterial effects (Imenshahidi & Hosseinzadeh, ; More, Kharat, & Kharat, ). Although berberine is also used in obese diabetic patients, its poor intestinal absorption may induce different degrees of diarrhea in some patients (Imenshahidi & Hosseinzadeh, ) and therefore prevents long‐term and wide application in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).…”

“…12 Pharmacological studies using doses of berberine (50-200 mg/kg per time, one time a day) 13 substantially exceed those likely to occur in humans (0.1-0.3 g per time, three times a day) have demonstrated that berberine has a broad-spectrum antibiotic activity, including Vibrio cholera, Shigella and Pseudomonas [14][15][16] and have approved that berberine has advantages in treating intestinal bacterial infections, including bacterial dysentery and viral infections. 10,[17][18][19][20] Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis can also be suppressed by berberine. 21 In addition, berberine has broad prospects in the treatment of secretory diarrhea, it can inhibit the hypersecretion of electrolytes caused by cholera toxin.…”

“…in a mice study [20]. In addition to anti-inflammation effect of berberine, baicalin and geniposide, berberine also has anti-bacterial activity [21,22]. Therefore, the potential anti-inflammation and anti-bacterial effects of these compounds in mHLJD decoction cream might constitute of the therapeutic effect in this trial.…”
