Best Available Techniques for Hazardous Waste Reduction in Plastic Product Manufacturing

Abstract

In this article, the estimated amount of hazardous waste generation factors (HWGFs) was investigated by the types and quantities of hazardous wastes originating from the plastic product production sector using the data obtained from the field studies. The amount of hazardous waste in the similar plastic product production industry in Turkey were estimated by using HWGFs calculated in this works the production along with capacity information belonging to the sector. The best available techniques (BAT) were proposed to the industry to reduce hazardous waste It is believed that this article will provide benefit regarding the reduction and the management of hazardous wastes generated by similar plastic product manufacturing industries in the world. Plastic product manufacturing industry is also the one of the priority industries that investigated in the project titled "Hazardous Waste Management in Compliance with European Union Environmental Regulations in Turkey" by the support of TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey). Current production processes were investigated to cover all inputs and outputs and hazardous waste lists and hazardous waste generation quantities per unit manufacturing (hazardous waste generation factors, HWGFs) were calculated for the mentioned industry. At the same time, hazardous waste generation quantity declarations made by industries in 2009 and 2010 to an internet based system called "Hazardous Waste Declaration System (HWDS)were evaluated and the range of HWGFs were created using possible minimum and maximum quantities for each waste using in this study and the literature data.
