Beta and neutrinoless double beta decays with KeV sterile fermions

Abstract: Motivated by the capability of the KATRIN experiment to explore the existence of KeV neutrinos in the [1 − 18.5] KeV mass range, we explore the viability of minimal extensions of the Standard Model involving sterile neutrinos (namely the 3 + N frameworks) and study their possible impact in both the beta energy spectrum and the neutrinoless double beta decay effective mass, for the two possible ordering cases for the light neutrino spectrum. We also explore how both observables can discriminate between motivate… Show more

“…To accommodate an eV scale sterile-like neutrino N 1 , with lepton number violating (LNV) Majorana mass manifest the new physics contribution beyond SM [85][86][87][88]. The well known process of NDBD includes the simultaneous decay of two neutrons from the nucleus of an isotope (A, Z ) into two protons and two electrons without the emission of any neutrinos in the final state [89][90][91][92][93],…”

“…In this section we will first review the treatment of 0νββ decay in the presence of sterile neutrinos, having previously been covered in detail in the literature in the context of the type-I seesaw [21,179], inverse and extended seesaws [180,181] and left-right symmetric models [182][183][184][185][186][187][188][189][190].…”
