“…Bringing a cross‐national perspective to bear on this question, this article explores the degree to which startups have taken hold in similar cities embedded in two different media systems: Seattle, United States, and Toulouse, France. While Seattle has been home to a wave of online news startups (Friedland, ), in Toulouse there have been just four—and all but one has ceased publication (Smyrnaios, Marty, & Bousquet, ). Through interviews with journalists, analysis of news articles and an original data set detailing the educational and professional backgrounds of startup founders, we examine differential startup formation in France and the United States.…”
