Beware imposters: MA‐1, a novel MALT lymphoma cell line, is misidentified and corresponds to Pfeiffer, a diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma cell line—A reply: Despite the same 8‐code STR, MA‐1 and Pfeiffer are cytogenetically diverse

“…To further assess whether t(1;14)(p22;q32)/BCL10‐IGH and t(14;18)(q32;q21)/IGH‐MALT1 are also implicated in the lymphomagenesis of HP‐independent gastric MALT lymphoma, we evaluated the aforementioned genetic translocations in tumour cells of 30 selected cases of gastric MALT lymphoma, including 23 HP‐independent and seven HP‐dependent cases, by interphase fluorescent in situ hybridization (supplementary material, Supplementary materials and methods) . Among 23 HP‐independent cases, we found one case with (1;14)(p22;q32)/BCL10‐IGH and one case with t(14;18)(q32;q21)/IGH‐MALT1.…”

“…OCI-Ly3 is a non-germinal centre B-cell origin DLBCL cell line without t(11;18)(q21;q21) [19,20]. MA-1 is a DLBCL cell line that is positive for t(14;18)(q32;q21)/IGH-MALT1, but negative for the nuclear expression of BCL10 and NF-κB (supplementary material, Supplementary materials and methods) [20,21,37,38]. Considering that MALT lymphoma cells are of non-germinal centre B-cell origin [7,24,39] and that t(14;18)(q32;q21)/IGH-MALT1 is a special chromosomal translocation that exists in MALT lymphoma [22,40,41], we selected these two B-cell lymphoma cell lines, OCI-Ly3 and MA-1, to mimic the in vitro environment of t(11;18)(q21;q21)-negative B-cell lymphomas.…”

“…For example, NIH grant applicants may be required to provide information on how they intend to address concerns about the identity or contamination of their cell lines. A variety of organizations advocate best practices for handling biological resources (12), including cell lines and cell banking (13,14), yet reports of misidentified or contaminated cell lines still appear in the literature (15,16).…”
