Beware ‘persuasive communication devices’ when writing and reading scientific articles

Abstract: Authors rely on a range of devices and techniques to attract and maintain the interest of readers, and to convince them of the merits of the author’s point of view. However, when writing a scientific article, authors must use these ‘persuasive communication devices’ carefully. In particular, they must be explicit about the limitations of their work, avoid obfuscation, and resist the temptation to oversell their results. Here we discuss a list of persuasive communication devices and we encourage authors, as wel… Show more

“…Our NMA will clearly define the types of acupuncture therapies included and their combined use to fully evaluate their effectiveness in the management of PS, which will be more persuasive. 37 To the best of our knowledge, this study will be the first standard pairwise meta-analysis and NMA of acupuncture therapies for the treatment of PS. Despite these limitations, our proposed methodology will compare the efficacies of different acupuncture methods in the treatment of PS, so as to provide a clinical evidence-based medical basis.…”

“…An estimated 38% of short articles in social and personality psychology seem to ignore limitations altogether (Clarke et al, 2023). Articles that do acknowledge limitations often do not own those limitations, with authors frequently noting a limitation and then proceeding to either: i) justify the limitation, for example, on the basis of limited resources, or by stating that the limitation is common in the field; or, ii) dismiss the importance of their limitation (particularly by discussing how their limitation is actually a strength; Lingard, 2015; also see Corneille et al, 2023).…”

“…Similarly, failure to flag the influence of specific methodological choices can mislead as to the true significance (statistical and otherwise) of the findings 9 . The use of persuasive communication devices, such as mischaracterising the theoretical framework or the current state of knowledge in the area, can give a false impression of the reliability and consistency of relevant evidence bases 10 . A contemporary emphasis on the need for published work to have demonstrable impact beyond the immediate research arena can compound such problems.…”
