Beyond a solvent: the roles of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride in the acid-catalysis for cellulose depolymerisation

Abstract: 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride plays other roles in the acid-catalysed depolymerisation of cellulose rather than being ‘merely’ a solvent for the biopolymer. The ionic liquid species enhances the Hammett acidity of the catalyst, thus improving the kinetics of cellulose depolymerisation.

“…A further possibility is to employ protic ionic liquids (ILs) as a (“catalytic”) solvent, affording another variant of the Organosolv process denoted the “Ionosolv” process . As cellulose is insoluble in the new protic ILs, the process contrasts starkly with earlier methods for acid‐catalysed depolymerisation of cellulose in dialkylimidazolium ILs . Accordingly, the acidic IL solvent acts specifically on lignin and hemicellulose.…”

“…1,2 Lactic acid (LA) is a prominent platform molecule, which is typically obtained by enzymatic conversion of sugars. 3,4 Scheme 1 depicts the large number of chemical products that can be obtained from LA. Catalytic dehydrogenation of LA to pyruvic acid (PyA) is of considerable importance for the production of L-amino acids, 5 cyanoacrylate adhesives, 6 perfumes, food additives, dietary and weightcontrol supplements, nutraceuticals, antioxidants 7 and photoresistant solvents for electronic processing.…”
