Bibliography on the occurrence and intrusion of saltwater in aquifers along the Atlantic Coast of the United States

Abstract: Freshwater aquifers along the Atlantic coast of the United States are vulnerable to the intrusion of saltwater from saline waters that bound the aquifers along their seaward margins. Incidences of saltwater intrusion have been documented along the Atlantic coast for more than 100 years. This report provides a bibliography of published litera ture relating to the occurrence and intrusion of saltwater along the Atlantic coast of the United States, including all of the coastal States from Maine to Florida (includ… Show more

“…Because upconing can result from displacement of relatively small volumes of water, it is generally regarded as a more prevalent cause of increasing concentrations of chloride in groundwater than intrusion. Barlow and Wild (2002) reviewed movement of the saltwater-transition zone throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain that has been documented for more than 100 years and which varies widely in form and degree under different hydrogeologic conditions. Although in general only small parts of aquifers have been affected by saltwater intrusion, some more widespread instances have also occurred.…”

“…Saltwater intrusion has been documented throughout the Atlantic coastal zone for more than 100 years (Barlow and Wild, 2002), but the degree of saltwater intrusion varies widely among localities and hydrogeologic settings. In many instances, the area contaminated by saltwater is limited to small parts of the aquifer…”

“…Published data, interpretations, and hypotheses that were directly relevant to the interpretations in this report, range from the local scale (county or municipality) to the state scale and to the regional scale; the reports were published from 1913 to 2015. For a comprehensive bibliography of reports on the presence of chloride and saltwater in groundwater along the Atlantic Coast, organized by state, see Barlow and Wild (2002). Selected summaries of freshwater-saltwater issues along the Atlantic Coast that illustrate cases and concepts directly relevant to this study are presented in Barlow (2003).…”
