Bidimensional unconstrained optimization approach to EMD: An algorithm revealing skin perfusion alterations in pseudoxanthoma elasticum patients

Abstract: For the first time, alterations in microvascular perfusion in PXE patients have been revealed. Our findings open new avenues for our understanding of pathophysiologic skin changes in PXE.

“…Reports of the influence of microcirculatory alterations on macrocirculation are rare and inconsistent [7][8][9]. Yet, recent publication of HumeauHeurtier et al [10] described alterations in microvascular perfusion in PXE patients. This may connect to the decrease of ABI values after exercise, however, further research is needed on this matter.…”

“…Section 6.7.4 ) [ 126 ]. Although the potential of some novel methodology is being investigated, at this time [ 161 ], PET/CT scan is probably the best option available to evaluate treatment outcome in PXE patients, but it requires access to well-equipped medical centers. However, it is very likely that a combination of methodology and multiyear trials will be needed to achieve clear and objective results in the future.…”

“…e PEEMD algorithm, as an improvement of the EMD algorithm, is a generally nonlinear, nonstationary, and self-adaptive data processing method [7,12,21]. Under the assumption that the data may have some different coexisting modes of oscillations and some noise at the same time, PEEMD can extract the intrinsic modes in the original data without noise signals by utilizing permutation entropy (PE) [22,23] to estimate the effect of noise signals.…”
