Bidirectionality, mediation, and moderation of metaphorical effects: The embodiment of social suspicion and fishy smells.

Abstract: Metaphorical effects are commonly assumed to be unidirectional, running from concrete to abstract domains but not vice versa. Noting that metaphorical effects are often found to be bidirectional, we explore how they may be mediated and moderated according to the principles of knowledge accessibility and applicability. Using the example of "something smells fishy" (a metaphorical expression of social suspicion), 7 experiments tested for the behavioral effects of fishy smells on social suspicion among English sp… Show more

“…Specifically, IJzerman and Koole (2011) explained that this aspect of their theory was not true for warmth related effects (see also Lee and Schwarz, 2012; for skepticism of this view), as they discuss findings showing that relationship warmth has an effect on the perception of ambient temperature (for original studies and replications, see Zhong and Leonardelli, 2008;IJzerman and Semin, 2010;Szymkow et al, 2013;IJzerman et al, 2015a; for a notable non-replication, see Ebersole et al, 2015). As an alternative to Lakoff and Johnson's model, IJzerman and Koole (2011) identified Barsalou's (1999, 2008 perceptual symbol systems (PSSs) as a rival candidate for attachment-related processes regarding underlying psychological processes in which concepts are built in perceptual systems through simulations relying on perceptual elements.…”

“…These are cases in which people seem to be victims of their tendencies to think metaphorically, for example in the form of basing potentially important decisions about trust and distrust on whether there are fishy smells in the environment (Lee & Schwarz, 2012).…”

“…However, previous research has neglected the potential impact of basal bodily sensations on cognitions determining health motivation. This is surprising as the theory of embodied cognition suggests a strong bidirectional relationship between bodily experiences and higher cognitive processes (Lee & Schwarz, 2012). Here, I will demonstrate that this concept is of particular importance for healthy behaviour.…”
