Big Data Research in the Field of Endocrine Diseases Using the Korean National Health Information Database

Abstract: The Korean National Health Information Database (NHID) contains big data combining information obtained from the National Health Insurance Service and health examinations. Data are provided in the form of a cohort, and the NHID can be used to conduct longitudinal studies and research on rare diseases. Moreover, data on the cause and date of death are provided by Statistics Korea. Research and publications based on the NHID have increased explosively in the field of endocrine disorders. “…CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 [ 12 ]. CVD was defined as prior myocardial infarction (I21, I22) or prior stroke (I63, I64) diagnosed as ICD-10 codes in one or more inpatient or outpatient records within 3 years before the index date [ 13 , 14 ]. For example, a person who used insulin concurrently with CKD had a diabetes severity score of 2.…”

“…The primary study outcome was a new active TB diagnosis, which was defined using the rare intractable disease (RID) registration codes for TB (V206, V246, and V000). The South Korean government has operated a RID registration program (V-code) in serious and costly long-term diseases such as TB to control the disease effectively [ 13 , 14 ]. Therefore, patients who had the TB-specific V-codes under RID program registration were offered up to 90–100% copayment reduction.…”

“…We analyzed the Korean National Health Information Database (NHID), which combines information obtained from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) collected for claims and reimbursement as well as the results of general health examinations provided to all Korean adults 12,13 . NHIS is a non-pro t, single-payer health care organization administered by the government of South Korea that covers virtually all Koreans (approximately 97% of the Korean population is enrolled in the National Health Insurance program, while 3% is covered by medical aid programs).…”

“…Cushing's syndrome (E24.2, E24.8, E24.9) and hyperprolactinemia (E221) were excluded from the analysis. The use of these ICD-10 codes was based on a recently proposed big data research methodology using the Korean National Health Information Database (10). Comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes, COPD or asthma, and liver cirrhosis, were de ned as having at least one claim in either outpatient, inpatient, or both settings using appropriate ICD-10 codes within one year prior to COVID-19 con rmation.…”
