Bilateral ocular surface squamous neoplasia with bilateral periocular basal cell carcinoma in a case of xeroderma pigmentosum

Abstract: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive disorder associated with multiple oculocutaneous manifestations. We discuss a unique case of XP having bilateral ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and periocular basal cell carcinoma. In the right eye, a large OSSN mass involving the ocular surface extensively along with intraocular invasion was noted, whereas in the left eye, the tumour mass was involving the limbus, and extending up to three clock hours. Because of extensive disease in the right eye,… Show more

“…None of our patients had bilateral involvement. Bilateral involvement of OSSN is very rare though very few reports have been found (Usui et al,2004;Grueb et al,2006;Gericke et al, 2008;Masanganise et al, 2010;Agarwal et al, 2017). The most common location of OSSN was nasal limbus similar to other studies (Gichuhi et al, 2015;Dandala et al, 2015a).…”

“…HIV infection has been associated with younger age at presentation of OSSN [ 31 , 33 ], female or no gender predilection [ 16 , 34 , 35 ], more severe course [ 36 , 37 ], bilaterality [ 38 ], worse prognosis [ 32 ], and increased risk of recurrence [ 39 ]. Immune dysregulation syndromes other than AIDS, including iatrogenic immunosuppression post-organ transplantation [ 39 ], non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [ 40 ], asthma/eczema/atopic diseases [ 41 44 ], ocular cicatricial pemphigoid [ 45 ], xeroderma pigmentosum [ 46 ], and Papillon–Lefèvre syndrome [ 47 ], can also predispose to OSSN.…”

“…49 Isolated case reports on bOSSN demonstrate association with HIV, XP, HPV infection, hereditary factors, atopic conjunctivitis, chronic wood dust exposure, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, neurodermatitis and epidermo-dysplasia verruciformis, and other systemic cancers (Table 1). 10–24 However, literature pertaining to clinical presentation and outcomes of bOSSN is sparse. 10–24 This retrospective series of 25 patients aims to determine the incidence and prevalence, describe the risk factors, clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of bOSSN.…”
