Bilateral Type 1 Tympanoplasty in Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract: A theoretical risk of iatrogenic sensorineural hearing loss during surgery has induced a reluctance to perform bilateral tympanoplasty type I among some otosurgeons. This paper presents results of bilateral surgery in 14 patients (28 ears). Fourteen patients with bilateral, dry tympanic membrane perforations caused by chronic otitis media were selected prospectively for bilateral tympanoplasty type I (28 ears) at a tertiary referral center. All patients had a HL corresponding to the size and localization of th… Show more

“…All outcomes suggested that there was no impact on recurrence after performing TWOM, even though the ears were in different infection conditions. Although many factors affect postoperative hearing results, the degree of ossicular destruction and the space surrounding the stapes are very important for hearing improvement [17][18][19]. In our study, we chose higher ossicular replacement prosthetics after reconstruction of the lateral attic wall.…”

“…is is primarily because of the risk of iatrogenic sensorineural loss. e evidence in favour of these restrictive arguments was as scarce as the evidence against it till Mane et al published their reports in 2013. ey conducted bilateral type I tympanoplasties in 14 patients (28) ears and achieved graft take-up rates as high as 96% with the airbone gap closure up to 20 dB in all the ears [45]. In the same year, Raghuwanshi and Asati reported 93% graft take-up rates in 32 patients (64 ears) [46].…”

“…[16] In our study we observed five cases of retractions (5.4%) within the 1st postoperative year. The retractions were at central zone in 2 and at posterosuperior zone in 3 of 92 patients.…”
