Rapidly growing building information modelling (BIM) in construction offers a number of advantages and new opportunities of improving efficiency and effectiveness of the construction process and enhancing the use of emerging technology throughout the project’s lifecycle, not only in new buildings, but also in existing ones, including overall infrastructure. Recently, there has been a great number of publications discussing BIM advantages in construction. A number of review papers summarising BIM usage cases have been published. However, as the preliminary research shows, not all organizations use BIM because of its disadvantages. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to study the extent of available literature on BIM, to determine the current situation of BIM usage, and summarise publications related to the application of BIM. The current study is limited solely to papers available in SpringerLink, ScienceDirect and Thomson Reuters Web of Sciences scientific databases. The obtained results make it clear that BIM case studies and research in academic journals show high level of BIM implementation in practice, and advantages of BIM. However, there are some limitations of BIM usage in practice. Moreover, new trends in the evolving BIM are presented and discussed in this paper.

Visual Language-Aided Construction Fire Safety Planning Approach in Building Information Modeling

Fires pose an enormous threat to human safety and many spectacular fires in under-construction buildings were reported over the past few years. Many construction sites only rely on fire extinguishers, as under-construction buildings do not contain a permanent fire protection system. Traditional safety planning lacks a justified approach for the firefighting equipment installation planning in the construction job site. Even though many government agencies made safety regulations for firefighting equipment installations, it is still a challenge to translate and execute these rules at the job site. Currently, the construction industry is devoted to discovering all the possible applications of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in the entire phases of the project life cycle. BIM technology enables the presentation of facilities in 3-D and offers rule-based modeling through visual programming tools. Therefore, this paper focuses on a visual language approach for rule translation and a multi-agent-based construction fire safety planning simulation in BIM. The proposed approach includes three core modules, namely: (a) Rule Extraction and Logic Development (RELD) Module, (b) Design for Construction Fire Safety (DCFS) Module, and (c) Con-fire Safety Plan Simulation (CSPS) Module. In addition, the DCFS module further includes three submodules, named as (1) Firefighting Equipment Installation (FEI) Module, (2) Bill of Quantities (BoQs) for firefighting Equipment (BFE) Module, and (3) Escape Route Plan (ERP) Module. The RELD module converts the OSHA fire safety rule into mathematical logic, and the DCFS module presents the development of the Con-fire Safety Planning approach by translating the rules from mathematical logic into computer-readable language. The three sub-modules of the DCFS module visualize the outputs of this research work. The CSPS module uses a multi-agent simulation to verify the safety rule compliance of the portable firefighting equipment installation plan the system in a BIM environment. A sample project case study has been implemented to validate the proof of concept. It is anticipated that the proposed approach has the potential to helps the designers through its effectiveness and convenience while it could be helpful in the field for practical use.

Abstract Bangladeshi construction industry suffers more safety issues than other developing countries in the world. Among many of these, accidents at the construction site go far beyond and shape a horrific figure of death every year. The aims of this study are to identify and prioritize the causes of accidents. This study also analyses and discusses causes of accident at the construction site in Bangladesh. A widespread literature review and open discussion took place to identify the causes and design the questionnaire. The questionnaire-based survey was used to elicit the attitude of four stakeholders such as workers, owners, consultants and contractors towards the causes of accident. Mean and relative importance index (RII) were used to determine the rank of causes, and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 23 was used to perform the data validation test. This study identifies 77 causes under 14 major groups and ranked them based on the mean and RII. The top five major groups of causes are management-, consultant-, technology-, labour- and contractor-related causes. The top five causes are unawareness of safety-related issue, lack of personal protective equipment, lack of safety eliminating/avoiding design, unfit equipment, lack of knowledge and training on equipment. This study will help the project participants and authorities to know and understand the various characteristics and linkage of causes of construction accidents to improve the construction safety management. It contributes to the body of knowledge, as it reveals for the first time the causes of acci dents in the Bangladeshi construction industry.
