Bim From Laser Scans… Not Just for Buildings: Nurbs-Based Parametric Modeling of a Medieval Bridge

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Building Information Modelling is not limited to buildings. BIM technology includes civil infrastructures such as roads, dams, bridges, communications networks, water and wastewater networks and tunnels. This paper describes a novel methodology for the generation of a detailed BIM of a complex medieval bridge. The use of laser scans and images coupled with the development of algorithms able to handle irregular shapes allowed the creation of advanced parametric objects, which were assembled to obtain a… Show more

“…The data analysis starts with the definition of grids on the surfaces analyzed for the study of the changes that the different elements have undergone over time. Other authors, such as Oreni et al (2016Oreni et al ( , 2017 [15] and Barazzetti et al (2015) [16] promote the structure of HBIM libraries for structural analysis, which analyze, in detail, elements of which it is necessary to know the geometry and, above all, the variations in the repetition of similar components. The research presented by Quattrini et al (2015) [17] is interesting because it considers the numerical model as a source of information in its complexity.…”

“…According to the heritage environments, an accurate representation of 3D parametric models affects the performance of restoration, conservation, retrofitting, building analyses, and facility management processes [5,17,18]. Historical buildings in contrast to the new build projects contain complex building components, and commercial BIM software does not support such geometric complexity as they are designed to model new build projects, and are limited to irregular shapes occurring in HBIM [5].…”

“…Other authors, such as Oreni et al, [112][113][114] and Barazzetti et al, [115,116], argue that BIM software presents limitations for modeling non-standard architectural objects, characteristic of architectural heritage. Therefore, the integration of the Rhinoceros software is proposed to model the architectural components of the analyzed building and to generate the H-BIM library.…”
