BIM: Promises and reality

Abstract: The building information modeling - BIM is a technology developed toward creation of computer based information model that encompasses whole building lifecycle. Toward that goal a number of information technology standards have been developed that enable different professions in AEC to cooperatively develop electronic building model. The paper gives overview of essential technologies, discusses their intended purpose, and gives outline of the currently achieved functionality.

“…Among these different simulation disciplines, the design of sustainable buildings and energy simulation has attracted the most interest among architects. In this context, BIM technology seems to be a natural companion to building simulation applications (Svetel et al 2014). The result is a data-rich model that integrates all the information on the construction, including architectural design, structural design and the process of construction and maintenance.…”

“…Building Information Modelling (BIM) is based on digital technologies developed with the special purpose of creating a digital model of a building that contains all its physical and functional characteristics, divided into groups, which allow independent, but at the same time synchronized realization of the project. The BIM model includes information that defines the entire life cycle of the building from: conceptual design, technical design, construction, management and maintenance [7,8].…”

“…Much of the promised revolution attributed to BIM are still to come true, in part due to a lack of specific technologies that are already applied in other areas or industries [2]. In addition, the very organization of the AEC industry is slowing down such development [3].…”
