Bimodal Solutions or Twice-Daily Icodextrin to Enhance Ultrafiltration in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

Abstract: The efficacy and safety of icodextrin has been well established. In this paper, we will discuss the pharmacokinetics and biocompatibility of icodextrin and its clinical effect on fluid management in peritoneal dialysis patients. Novel strategies for its prescription for peritoneal dialysis patients with inadequate ultrafiltration are reviewed.

“…23,24 Icodextrin is currently licensed for one exchange a day, but case series suggest that the use of more exchanges of icodextrin might be safe and effective to improve fluid homeostasis in selected patients. [25][26][27] This approach is currently being investigated in a prospective, randomized controlled trial (NCT01944852).…”

“…A napi kétszeri bimodális PD-rezsim mellett jelentősen csökken a peritonealis glükózexpozíció, a betegek testsúlya, vérnyomása és a balkamra-hypertrophia mértéke [21]. A biztonságosság és hatékonyság pontos meghatározására azonban további tanulmányok szüksé-gesek.…”
