Binary Pectin-Chitosan Composites for the Uptake of Lanthanum and Yttrium Species in Aqueous Media

Abstract: Rare-earth elements such as lanthanum and yttrium have wide utility in high-tech applications such as permanent magnets and batteries. The use of biopolymers and their composites as adsorbents for La (III) and Y (III) ions were investigated as a means to increase the uptake capacity. Previous work has revealed that composite materials with covalent frameworks that contain biopolymers such as pectin and chitosan have secondary adsorption sites for enhanced adsorption. Herein, the maximum adsorption capacity of … Show more

“…The PDI of BNPs, K-CS NPs, and CNPs were 0.202 ± 0.001, 0.24 ± 0.01, and 0.37 ± 0.02, respectively. The results were in line with other reports [ 37 , 38 ]. A PDI below 0.5 indicates that NPs have a monodisperse distribution [ [37] , [38] , [39] ].…”

“…Whereas, by comparing the SSE and EABS values of the three models, the Langmuir model has the smallest error, which suggests that it gives the most suitable description for the adsorption system on OP. Similar findings have also been mentioned by other literatures, the adsorption isothermal of OP in other metal ion solutions are more relevant to Langmuir model [30,42], and removal of La(III) and Y(III) by some general adsorbents are also conformed with the Langmuir model [33,38,43].…”

“…Therefore, the increase in the retention time can very likely enhance the curative efficacy of a drug. A typical polydispersity of the suspension is between 0.1 and 0.5 23 , 24 . In our study, the PDI values of BNPs and FNPs were 0.202 ± 0.001 and 0.32 ± 0.01, respectively, which indicates that NPs are in monodisperse distribution mode 25 .…”
