Bio-Based Polyurethane Composites and Hybrid Composites Containing a New Type of Bio-Polyol and Addition of Natural and Synthetic Fibers

Abstract: This article describes how new bio-based polyol during the liquefaction process can be obtained. Selected polyol was tested in the production of polyurethane resins. Moreover, this research describes the process of manufacturing polyurethane materials and the impact of two different types of fibers—synthetic and natural (glass and sisal fibers)—on the properties of composites. The best properties were achieved at a reaction temperature of 150 °C and a time of 6 h. The hydroxyl number of bio-based polyol was 47… Show more

“…In another study, PUR composites were reinforced by selected amounts (5, 10, 15 wt %) of fly ash and wood ash, however, some deteriorations in mechanical performances were observed [ 19 ]. An opposite effect was observed by Olszewski et al [ 20 ] in the case of PUR materials reinforced by the addition of glass and sisal fibers. In both cases, an improvement in the mechanical characteristics of PUR materials was observed.…”

“…The addition of 20 wt.% egg-shells resulted in a significant improvement of the abovementioned properties. Interesting results were presented by Olszewski et al [ 3 ] in the case of PUR foams containing glass and sisal fibers—the flexural strength, impact strength, and hardness of materials have been improved by the addition of both kinds of fibers. The effect of waste sludge particles on the physical and mechanical properties of PUR foams was studied by Kairyte et al [ 10 ].…”

“…Recently, the synthesis and development of polyurethane (PUR) composites containing natural fillers have attracted increased attention in industry and academia [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. The application of natural fillers as reinforcing materials in the production of PUR foams has both ecological and economic advantages.…”

“…In the production of PU materials, most research has focused on foamed materials [ 8 , 14 , 15 ]. However, the area of obtaining cross-linked not foamed polyurethane materials has not been explored in depth, with only a few works on this subject [ 16 , 17 ].…”
