Bio-inspired approach for innovative design of knee protectors for recreational sports

Abstract: In this paper the process of an innovative design of a knee protector is presented. The main goal of the research was to find a creative design solution for more efficient protective equipment for light recreational sports. The research is based on an interdisciplinary approach where the possibilities of ergonomics and bionics methods were applied. In order to recognize and provide proper design requirements a valuable market research in the field of knee protector products was performed. An ergonomic research… Show more

“…Among them, we can mention the recent emergence of the coronavirus case, called COVID-19, whose rapid international and national spread caused a global health emergency [3]. Indeed, in this case, pharmaceutical companies show that they do not have an adequate speed to respond to the world's urgent need.We can also mentionthe timeconsuming bio-inspired design projects such as the innovative design of knee protectors [4], development of miniature robots [5], or commercial aircraft performance improvement [6]. The designers in these types of projectscould overcome this drawback by adopting systematic approaches such as TRIZ.…”

“…Many studies mentioned in the literature attempt to integrate disciplines, concepts, and criteria during the design phase of the production machine to meet the needs of customers and users and to reduce modifications by adding additional procedures to the production process to increase the efficiency. Thus, we could mention the work relating to Design for X: where X can be a safety and ergonomics [2][3][4], cost [5], reliability [6,7], and user experience [8].…”

“…Overall, two main approaches are taken to bio-inspired design. One of these approaches is to identify a natural solution and use it to inspire a new or improved product; whereas the other is to solve a design problem with inspiration from nature [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. It can often be unclear how the biological innovation example itself is selected and there is little evidence in the literature to suggest that comprehensive and systematic biological example selection always occurs.…”
