Bioactive Peptides against Human Apicomplexan Parasites

Abstract: Apicomplexan parasites are the causal agents of different medically important diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, and malaria. Toxoplasmosis is considered a neglected parasitosis, even though it can cause severe cerebral complications and death in immunocompromised patients, including children and pregnant women. Drugs against Toxoplasma gondii, the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis, are highly toxic and lack efficacy in eradicating tissue cysts, promoting the establishment of latent infection… Show more

“…Rivera-Fernández et al examined the experimental effects of various bioactive peptides on Apicomplexan parasites, which are responsible for a range of dangerous diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, and malaria. They also discussed some biological and metabolomic generalities of the parasites to explain the mechanisms of action of the peptides on the Apicomplexan targets [ 8 ]. The other review paper was written by Prof. Juretić, which emphasizes the importance of designing multi-functional peptides that can reach intracellular targets in order to develop more effective peptide drugs.…”
