Biochar impact on herbicides behavior in the soils: an approach in Brazil

Abstract: -The application of biochar to soils because of beneficial effects is proven by many international researchers and this can increase herbicides sorption and reduce effectiveness on weed management. Positive impacts are reported in relation to the environmental behavior of herbicides, since the increase of the sorption reduces the leaching of these products to groundwater. Negative impacts are reported in relation to agronomic management of herbicides, since the sorption increase reduces the availability of the… Show more

“…On the other hand, any addition of organic compounds to the soil can directly affect the behavior of residual herbicides and consequently the weed control efficacy [35,36]. For instance, the application of biochar to the soil is carried out for carbon sequestration, waste management, increased CEC, soil pH elevation, water retention, and nutrient source, which typically benefits agricultural production [37].…”

“…Herbicides applied pre-emergence promote early weed control and help manage resistant biotypes [20][21][22]. However, the efficiency of these molecules depends on their bioavailability in the solution, the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, the method of preparing the area, and climatic factors during and after application [23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…This can result in reduced herbicide availability for absorption by weeds present in the seed bank, and hence, reduced control efficiency. Furthermore, soil texture also affects herbicide movement in the soil profile, with greater leaching potential in coarse-textured soils, which can lead to off-target movement and potential environmental risks [9]. Therefore, the choice and application of pre-emergent herbicides should take into account the soil texture and other relevant soil properties to optimize weed control and minimize environmental risks.…”
