Biochemical Profiling for Antioxidant and Therapeutic Potential of Pakistani Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Genetic Resource

Abstract: In Pakistan, chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) are the largest grown legume crops, especially in desert areas. Along with an excellent source of nutrition, chickpea seeds have discernible medicinal and antioxidant characteristics. The diverse set of 90 chickpea genotypes (66 desi and 24 kabuli) were collected from different research zones in Pakistan, and seed flour was used for biochemical profiling. Genotypes were significantly different (Tukey HSD test, P < 0.05) for the traits under investigation. In n… Show more

“…Due to unpredicted climate changes, pulses have become more prone to oxidative damage by excessive production of toxic ROS such as hydrogen peroxide, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals (Sultana et al, 2014 ). To combat ROS generated under abiotic stresses, specialized enzymatic antioxidants, i.e., SOD, POD, CAT, and APX get activated and act as the first line of defense to detoxify the effects of ROS (Tang et al, 2019 ; Jameel et al, 2021 ). SOD convert into H 2 O 2 for further reduction to water by CAT and POD (He et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Ascorbic acid (AsA) is an important non-enzymatic antioxidant. It functions as an antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species ( Jameel et al., 2021 ). The high concentration of AsA content in tomatoes plays a fundamental role in different aspects related to plant life and human health ( Di Matteo et al., 2010 ).…”

“…Accordingly, synthetic substances offer a reliable and effective way to protect against the harmful effects of radiation. Thus, further research and development is required to create more effective radiation protection, safer synthetic substances for human consumption, and to determine the safe limits for their applications [ 110 , 111 , 112 ]. However, it is important to note that synthetic antioxidants can frequently cause adverse health effects when used in high doses [ 113 ].…”
