Biocompatible 2D Titanium Carbide (MXenes) Composite Nanosheets for pH-Responsive MRI-Guided Tumor Hyperthermia

Abstract: The emerging of two-dimensional (2D) MXenes significantly broadens the family members and versatile applications of 2D materials, but the rational design of MXene-based composites and their specific applications in theranostic biomedicine are still challenging. In this work, we report, for the first time, on the elaborate design of the Ti3C2-based composite MXene (MnO x /Ti3C2) for highly efficient theranostic applications against cancer. These MnO x /Ti3C2 composite MXenes have been constructed by triggering … Show more

“…[202] Althoughr esearch into MXenes has expanded very fast and captured much attention in the areas of energy storage, [202] sensing, [204] and catalysis, [204,205] the biomedical applications of MXenes are still in their infancy.D ue to their remarkable photothermal performance, multimodali maginga bility,a nd excellent biocompatibility,M Xenes have already been used for cancer theranostics. [206][207][208][209][210][211][212][213][214] However,o nly af ew reports to date have documented the antibacterial activity of MXenes, [215À218] which implies an eed for further investigation of this aspect. “…Multifunctional nanocomposites based on MXenes have also been synthesized for cancer theranostics. For example, Chen and co‐workers fabricated MnO x /Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites through a high‐efficiency “redox‐induced growth” approach by in situ growing MnO x onto the surface of Ti 3 C 2 MXene ( Figure A) . The MnO x component of this nanocomposite exhibited a unique T 1 ‐weighted MR imaging capability.…”

“…Concerning the MnO 2 /MXene composite (Figure 5d) synthesized by the redox reaction, Figure 5d shows the structure of MnO 2 as nanowhiskers, and it is clear from Figure 5e that the introduction of ε-MnO 2 significantly increased the pore size of the sample, especially with Ti 3 C 2 T x . [185] In situ oxidation growth is mainly achieved in a liquid phase. [184] Therefore, it is reasonable to suggest that the heat treatment affects the structure of the composites.…”
