This study aimed to evaluate the gene expression of HSP70 and HMA3 in the switchgrass inoculated with plant-growth-promoting-bacteria (PGPB) under cadmium (Cd) stress and to observe the benefit of PGPB in plant growth and development. Plants were grown in hydroponic culture and treated with PGPB inoculants: Pseudomonas grimontii, Pantoea vagans, Pseudomonas veronii, and Pseudomonas fluorescens with the strains Bc09, So23, E02, and Oj24, respectively. The experimental results revealed that HSP70 and HMA3 genes expressed highly in the PGPB-inoculated plants under Cd stress. In addition, the expression of HSP70 and HMA3 genes was considerably higher in the first two days after successive four-day exposure of Cd in plants compared to the last two days of exposure. Increased biomass and indole-3-acetic-acid production with reduced Cd accumulation were observed in the PGPB-inoculated plants under Cd stress compared to the Cd-control plants. These PGPB, with their beneficial mechanisms, protect plants by modifying the gene expression profile that arises during Cd-toxic conditions and increased the healthy biomass of switchgrass. This demonstrates there is a correlation among the growth parameters under Cd stress. The PGPB in this study may help to intensify agriculture by triggering mechanisms to encourage plant growth and development under heavy metal stress.

Background There is a critical need to examine whether mining of molybdenum (Mo) ore will affect Mo absorption and translocation by plants at a community level. Methods Indigenous plants and their rhizospheric soil (0–20 cm) growing in two different areas including the mining and the unexploited areas were collected from the Luanchuan Mo mine—one of the largest Mo mines in Asia. The concentrations of Mo and other heavy metals of plants or soil were measured by ICP-AES. Mo absorption and translocation in plants growing in two areas were investigated and compared. Heavy metal pollution in soil was also evaluated by the potential ecological hazard index method. Results Mo concentration in mining soils was higher with the changes from 108.13 to 268.13 mg kg−1 compared to unexploited area. Mo concentrations in shoots and roots of plants growing in the mining area were also significant higher than those growing in the unexploited area with 2.59 and 2.99 times, respectively. The Mo translocation factor of plants growing in the unexploited area was 1.61, which reached 1.69 times that of plants growing in the mining area. Mo was the main heavy metal pollutant in the soil of both the mining and the unexploited areas. Conclusion Mining of Mo had changed not only the Mo concentration in soil but also Mo absorption and translocation in plants. Plants growing in the mining area absorbed more Mo from the soil but translocated relatively less to shoots than plants of the unexploited area. However, the mechanisms of Mo absorption and translocation of plants in mining area should be further studied in the future.

Lapindo Mudflow in Sidoarjo in 2006 brought heavy metals cadmium (Cd) that polluted the soil and environment around the affected area. Phytoremediation using water spinach (Ipomea reptans) is one of the alternatives to decrease the heavy metal pollution on Lapindo mud. The organic materials (compost and biochar) can also be used to reduce the contamination of heavy metals in soils. The aim of this study was to obtain the best composition of organic matter and biochar to support phytoremediation using water spinach plant in the cadmium-polluted soil. The study was conducted in a greenhouse with eight treatments consisted of four levels of organic matter application. The parameters measured were plant height, number of leaves, pH, CD content, and uptake of Cd. The results showed that there was a significant effect on the addition of compost and biochar on plant growth, Cd content, and Cd uptake. Results of the study showed that the addition of compost gave better results than that of biochar. The best treatment was on K7 (contaminated soil : compost : biochar; 1:1:1) for all parameters observed. Compared to the K0 (control) treatment, height of the plant increased up to 24%, the number of leaves increased up to 100%, the Cd content in the roots and shoots increased up to 44% and 95%, the content of the Cd in the planting media after the planting period decreased by 61%.
