Biological functions of transcribed spacer regions in eucaryotic pre-rRNAs remain elusive so far. Utilization of the comparative approach to analyse their secondary structure has been impeded by the extensive sequence divergence observed among most of the specimens available to date. However, we have taken advantage of the recent derivation of a set of largely similar sequences for different schistosome species to look for the presence of constrained secondary structures within the internally transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). We show that several common features of secondary structure are shared by these species despite sequence variation, with some of them supported by compensatory changes, suggesting a significant role of ITS2 as an RNA domain during ribosome biogenesis.

Dislocations in SrTiO3 deformed plastically by indentation at 900 and 1100 °C are studied by comprehensive transmission electron microscopy. At both 900 and 1100°C all the dislocations studied have Burgers vectors of either 〈100〉 or 〈110〉 type. At 900 °C both types of dislocation are in the glide configuration. On the other hand, at 1100°C 〈001〉 dislocations are in the climb configuration, although most of 〈110〉 dislocations are in the glide configuration. Small dislocation loops, both of 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 types, are observed, and most of them are identified as vacancy type.

“…For the preparation of bis(trans-vinyliodide)s 11 and 13 (Table 2), a variation of Schwartzs hydrozirconation/iodination sequence reported by Jacobsen and co-workers was found to be highly beneficial. [25] The addition of Schwartzs reagent to both alkynes was found to be very fast in dichloromethane and, more importantly, the success of the addition was much less sensitive to the quality of Schwartz reagent. Quenching the reaction mixture with iodine affords very reproducibly high yields of 11 and 13.…”
