Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Results for Estimating Body Composition Are Associated with Glucose Metabolism Following Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in Obese Japanese Patients

Abstract: We investigated the association between body composition and changes in glucose metabolism following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in obese Japanese patients. Thirty-two Class III obese patients were assessed before LSG and 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Variables including fat mass (FM), % body fat (%FM), total and skeletal muscle mass (MM), the ratio of lower extremity MM to body weight (BW) (L/W), and the ratio of upper extremity MM to BW (U/W) were measured while using bioelectrical impedance… Show more

“…Consistent with other studies, our results reflect significant improvements in the anthropometric variables in obese patients after LSG [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, our study confirms that LSG induced a substantial improvement in several glucose parameters.…”

“…However, BIA lightly underestimated fat mass and overestimated fat-free mass and visceral adipose tissue compared to DXA [10,11]. However, BIA proved to be useful to measure changes in fat mass, body fat, total and skeletal muscle mass, ratio of lower extremity muscle mass, and ratio of upper extremity muscle mass to body weight in gastrectomized patients [12]. Simple anthropometric measurements, like waist circumference [10,13], are also useful and very informative, and BMI and body weight are still the most used parameters, in both clinical and epidemiological studies.…”

“…There are several methods to evaluate skeletal muscle mass, including bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), CT, and DXA. BIA, which has been used to evaluate muscle mass in several studies ( Ozeki et al, 2018 ), may be inaccurate in patients with obesity as the excess fat tissue surrounding the bone and water content could result in measurement errors. In this study, we evaluated patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy using abdominal CT images.…”
