Bioelectrical impedance analysis to estimate body composition in children and adolescents: a systematic review and evidence appraisal of validity, responsiveness, reliability and measurement error

Abstract: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a practical method to estimate percentage body fat (%BF). In this systematic review, we aimed to assess validity, responsiveness, reliability and measurement error of BIA methods in estimating %BF in children and adolescents. We searched for relevant studies in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane through November 2012. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts for inclusion, extracted data and rated methodological quality of the included studies. We performed a … Show more

“…Participants were asked to fast overnight for at least 10 hours. After the assessors manually introduced the age, sex and height into the scale system, the participants stood on the scale with light clothes and bared foot 26 . Skinfolds thickness (sum of skinfolds); Triceps and subscapular skinfolds were measured with a skinfold calliper, with a constant pressure of 10 g/mm 2 (Harpenden Skinfold Caliper Model HSB-BI, UK) according to standard procedures 23 .…”

“…Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a practical method and non-invasive bedside technique, and it evaluates specific body composition parameters (14). In addition, it is possible to obtain the phase angle (PA) value through BIA, a variable that indicates cell membrane integrity and can be used as a prognostic indicator and a predictor of survival under certain clinical conditions (15).…”

“…Estudos que investigaram a estimativa da composição corporal pela BIA em comparação ao DEXA em indivíduos obesos tem encontrado que este método subestima a MG e superestima a MLG [6][7] . No presente estudo, a equação proposta por Houtkooper et al 13 também subestimou a MG (-1,5 kg) e superestimou a MLG (+1,4 kg), corrroborando com esses estudos.…”
