Biogas purification using water scrubber with variations of water flow rate and biogas pressure

Abstract: Biogas is a form of alternative energy which can be obtained from the anaerobic degradation process of organic materials. The presence of CO2 in biogas needs to be removed to increase its CH4 concentration, which simultaneously increasing its calorific value and biogas qualities. This study used the water scrubber method to absorb CO2 and separate it from the CH4 contained in biogas. The variables used are the biogas pressures of 2, 3, and 4 bar and water flow rates of 0.1 and 0.15 L/s with a contact time of 6… Show more

“…T5 and T4 had completely high-water flow rate (19.678-19.943 mL/s) than the other treatments and the control. The results were similar by [12] the effectiveness of CO2 absorption of biogas increase along with higher biogas pressure and water flow rate. This is because the adsorbent takes more time to absorb the impurity gases in the bio gas, also due to the remodeling process the microbes in the digester are not good.…”

“…Gas pressure has a function to flow gas into the adsorbent tube and into the bio gas sample holder. [12] during the time of gas pressure test in columns adsorbent should be conservation as to not become over-pressured nor pull out (under-pressured). This is caused by anaerobic fermentation process is very sensitive to changes in temperature and biogas production will decrease rapidly due to changes in temperature reactor inside reactor.…”

“…Biogas upgrading has widely been carried out using various techniques, including absorption, adsorption, membrane, biological and cryogenic separation (Awe et al, 2017;Kapoor et al, 2019). Previous research on this subject indicates that the absorption and adsorption techniques have been widely employed due to their simplicity, cost, and environmental friendliness (Bauer et al, 2013;Gantina et al, 2020). The water scrubbing technology employs the difference in solubility of H2S and CO2, which are much lower than CH4 i.e., the solubility of CO2 in water is 25 times higher than that of methane at 25 0 C (Bauer et al, 2013).…”

“…Water scrubbing has been reported to be the most extensively used technology around the world (Kapoor et al, 2017). Though numerous studies (Gantina et al, 2020;Ilyas, 2006;Rajivgandhi & Singaravelu, 2014;Vijay et al, 2006) have focused on the use of High-Pressure Water Scrubbing (HPWS), it is characterized by…”
