Polymeric capsules often buckle, collapse or even break when being processed in the dried state into other materials under high temperature and pressure due to moderate mechanical rigidity. In the case of nonspherical capsules, to keep their precious anisotropic morphology intact under harsh conditions is even more challenging since the whole surface of such kinds of capsules does not experience the same stress or strain due to the different surface curvatures. In the current work, we reported a strategy to prepare polydopamine (PDA) capsules with an ellipsoidal shape and enhanced mechanical rigidity using polystyrene ellipsoids as the sacrificial anisotropic templates. Bio-inspired oxidation induced selfpolymerization of dopamine can form conformal PDA coatings on polystyrene ellipsoids of various aspect ratios and sizes. Several strategies have been exploited to increase the thickness of the PDA shell, among which, iterating PDA coating produces ellipsoidal PDA capsules with a thick and robust shell.These ellipsoidal PDA capsules can survive carbonization at temperatures as high as 800 C and were directly turned into N-doped carbon capsules with a well-defined ellipsoidal shape, excluding the necessity of removing the sacrificial templates after carbonation. Furthermore, the rigid PDA ellipsoidal capsules are efficient adsorbents for organic dyes in contaminated water and have impressive adsorption efficiencies as high as 200 mg g À1.

Polydopamine (PDA) capsule and core-shell structures with tailored structures and properties are of particular interests due to their multifunctions and potential applications as new colloidal structures in diverse¯elds. Among the available fabrication methods, PDA¯lm onto colloidal particles followed by selective template removal has attracted extensive attention due to its advantages of precise control over the size, wall thickness and functions of the obtained capsules. The past several years has witnessed a rapid increase of research concerning the new fabrication strategies, functionalization and applications of this kind of capsules and core-shell structures, particularly in many¯elds such as drug delivery, catalysis, antibacterial, etc. In this review, the very recent progress of the capsule and core-shell structures based on PDA are summarized. There are basically two sections, including the fabrication process of PDA capsules, core-shell structures, and the various applications based on PDA.

Microencapsulation as a major technique of enzyme immobilization is reviewed. Fabrication of enzyme‐containing microcapsules is broadly categorized according to whether a semipermeable membrane coating or a porous polymeric network structure is primarily responsible for enclosure of enzymes within the internal microcapsule phase. Microcapsules are mostly spherical with diameters usually in the micro‐ to millimeter range and exhibit core‐shell structures of variable complexity. Liposomes and vesicles formed from amphiphilic (co)‐polymers (polymersomes) are widely used to prepare membrane‐coated microcapsules. Hydrogels, sol–gels and other organic–inorganic hybrid materials, or layer‐by‐layer structures made through controlled assembly of polyelectrolytes are used to prepare microcapsules composed of internal polymeric networks. Method combination where polymeric network microcapsules are coated with a suitable membrane to generate tailored core‐shell structures is also used for enzyme encapsulation. Advances in the material sciences contribute to the development of microcapsules with improved properties such as enhanced morphological stability, reduced enzyme leakage, and designed physicochemical permeability and enzyme biocompatibility. Soluble enzymes, but also enzyme aggregates and other insoluble enzyme preparations, are encapsulated. Multienzyme microcapsules are interesting small‐scale bioreactors for confined and even compartmentalized cascade biotransformation. Techniques of microcapsule preparation are described, and applications of microencapsulated enzymes in biotechnology and biomedicine are discussed.
