Biological Variation and Reference Change Value Data for Serum Neuron‐Specific Enolase in a Turkish Population

Abstract: As the performance index (PI) was found to be less than 2 (PI = 0.95), it is concluded that the NSE measurements have a desirable performance for analytical imprecision. Since the II was found to be less than 1 (II: 0.74), the reference values will be of little use. Thus, RCV would provide better information for deciding whether a significant change has occurred.

“…NSE has been researched in many childhood period neurological disorders (Lima et al, 2004). NSE is helpful in the diagnosis of neurologic diseases like ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, Guillain‐Barre syndrome, Alzheimer disease, delirium and Creutzfeldt‐Jacob disease (Matyar et al, 2016; Isgrò et al, 2015). Additionally increase NSE levels have been identified in tumors like melanoma, seminoma, renal cell carcinoma and phaechromocytoma (Isgrò et al, 2015).…”

“…Ensolases are dimers formed of a combination of three separate subunits (α, β and γ). The NSE yy-dimer has 78 kDA molecular weight and is expressed by neurons in the central nervous system and by neuroendocrine cells in the periphery (Matyar et al, 2016). The yy-dimer of NSE occurs during neurogenesis and increases during neuronal differentiation; this makes it a good marker of neuronal differentiation and maturation (Kaiser et al, 1989).…”

“…This can be explained by multiple factors, such as the difference in hemolysis interference between newborns and adults or the variability between measurement systems used to detect hemolysis and serum NSE. In this study, NSE was quantified using two commercially available and widely used Cobas platforms with high precision and limited interference compared to other measurement systems used in previous studies [2,[24][25][26]. As shown in Supplementary Figure 1A, results on both Cobas platforms were identical and so the approach described here is transferable to other immunochemical and chemical platforms.…”

“…This study established a serum NSE population reference interval of upper limit 25.4 ng/mL (90% confidence interval: 24.5‐26.2), which is significantly higher than the reference interval stated by Roche Diagnostics GmbH. The upper limit of the reference interval provided by the Roche NSE kit is 17.0 ng/mL . This difference may be due to population disparities and inter‐individual variation in the cohort used to construct the interval.…”
