Biologically Active Carbazole Alkaloids from Murraya koenigii

Abstract: The bioassay guided fractionation of the acetone extract of the fresh leaves of Murraya koenigii resulted in the isolation of three bioactive carbazole alkaloids, mahanimbine (1), murrayanol (2), and mahanine (3), as confirmed from their (1)H and (13)C NMR spectral data. Compound 2 showed an IC(50) of 109 microg/mL against hPGHS-1 and an IC(50) of 218 microg/mL against hPGHS-2 in antiinflammatory assays, while compound 1 displayed antioxidant activity at 33.1 microg/mL. All three compounds were mosquitocidal a… Show more

“…Antioxidant carbazoles have been reported present in MKL may be favorably contributing to the memory enhancing effect seen in the present study. Thus, the protective effect of MKL may be attributed to its antioxidant property by virtue of which susceptible brain cells get exposed to less oxidative stress resulting in reduced brain damage and improved neuronal function (Chakrabarty et al, 1997;Ramsewak et al, 1999;Tachibana et al, 2001;Wang et al, 2003).…”

“…Ayurvedic literature as well as recent studies highlights the potential of MKL as an antidiabetic agent (Yadav et al, 2002;Adebajo et al, 2004Adebajo et al, , 2006Kesari et al, 2005). Leaf extract of Murraya koenigii have also been reported to posses antifungal, antineoplastic, nitric oxide scavenging and antioxidant activities (Das et al, 1965;Khan et al, 1996a;Chakrabarty et al, 1997;Khan et al, 1997;Ramsewak, et al, 1999;Tachibana et al, 2001;Baliga et al, 2003). Anti-oxidant, Antitumor, Anti-microbial and Anti-diabetic actives have been reported for some carbazole alkaloids, which were identified as the major compounds in Murraya koenigii leaves (Tachibana et al, 2001;Adebajo et al, 2004Adebajo et al, , 2006Ito et al, 2006).…”

“…Solubility of ferulic acid in water is 780 mg/mL hence, it was identified in both samples RS3 and RS4 ( Mahanimbine is a carbazole alkaloid found in herbs and spices. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition, [19] antidiabetic, [20] hypolipidemic, [20] and anti-oxidant activity [21] has been reported.…”

“…Lee et al (2002) noted that enrichment of phenolic compounds within the plant extract is correlated with their enhanced antioxidant activity, It is reported to have antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti carcinogenic, anti dysenteric stimulant, hypo glycaemic and anti microbial activities . Biologically active carbazole alkaloids are reported to have anti microbial properties (Ramsewak et al ,1999). Curry leaves have been reported to contain tocopherol, b-carotene, lutein and alkaloids .…”
