Biopolymer-Based Transdermal Films of Donepezil as an Alternative Delivery Approach in Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment

Abstract: Abstract. Matrix type transdermal films of donepezil (DNP) as an alternative delivery approach was designed to improve patient compliance to Alzheimer disease treatment. Sodium alginate, a natural polysaccharide, was used as matrix-forming agent in the optimization of transdermal films. Propylene glycol and dl-limonene was added into films as a plasticizer and permeation enhancer, respectively. As well as mechanical strength and bioadhesiveness of optimized transdermal films of DNP, the impact of dl-limonene c… Show more

“…These components are responsible for the permeation of a drug. A similar result was reported by using linalool as a permeation enhancer using the drug curcumin [ 14 ]. Galipoğlu et al also showed that limonene, which is a component of coriander oil, increases the permeation of donepezil [ 15 ].…”

“…Pharmaceutics 2020, 12, x FOR PEER REVIEW 2 of 16 orally; however, significant variations in DH plasma concentrations and gastrointestinal side-effects, including nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and abdominal pain, are associated with oral administration. In addition, owing to dementia and dysphagia, elderly patients have difficult in consuming medicines effectively [8,9]. Thus, transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs) can circumvent issues associated with oral administration and may be the best therapeutic platform for improving patient compliance.…”
