Biosynthesis of Secondary Metabolites Based on the Regulation of MicroRNAs

Abstract: MicroRNA (miRNA), a noncoding ribonucleic acid, is considered to be important for the progression of gene expression in plants and animals by rupture or translational repression of targeted mRNAs. Many types of miRNA regulate plant metabolism, growth, and response to biotic and abiotic factors. miRNA characterization helps to expose its function in regulating the process of post-transcriptional genetic regulation. There are a lot of factors associated with miRNA function, but the function of miRNA in the organ… Show more

“…A similar argument may be made for the other natural chemicals discussed in this review. An example: secondary metabolites include alkaloids, which are mostly constituted of nitrogen and are commonly employed in medicine [ 47 ]. Alkaloids are one of the most diverse classes of natural chemicals, with over 12,000 known structures.…”

“…The progress made in this area is provided by several studies: Refs. [ 23 , 58 , 82 ]—describing microRNA-mediated regulation in flavonoid, terpenoid, alkaloid, and other N-containing metabolites biosynthesis; ref. [ 55 ]—pointed out the significance of miRNAs in the enhancement of flavonoid biosynthesis; ref.…”

“…As plant-based drug development is advancing due to its proven efficacy and cost-effectiveness, plant alkaloids are the most promising. For the discovery of new natural product-based chemopreventive agents, a judicious selection and a holistic approach for the selection of compound (individual or group), plant source, and plant part are pivotal [ 18 , 140 , 141 ]. In the scenario of tremendous anthropogenic pressure on natural plant resources and many plant resources coming into the category of “Rare” or “Endangered”, the task of getting the natural compounds becomes a tough job though [ 142 ].…”
