Biotechnological advances in Lilium

Abstract: Modern powerful techniques in plant biotechnology have been developed in lilies (Lilium spp., Liliaceae) to propagate, improve and make new phenotypes. Reliable in vitro culture methods are available to multiply lilies rapidly and shorten breeding programs. Lilium is also an ideal model plant to study in vitro pollination and embryo rescue methods. Although lilies are recalcitrant to genetic manipulation, superior genotypes are developed with improved flower colour and form, disease resistance and year round f… Show more

“…Improvement of lily accessions through conventional breeding is time-consuming, tedious, and cost-intensive due to the long time requirement (averaging three years) from seed-to-flower production [ 5 ]. Moreover, most lily cultivars are susceptible to many diseases, although a few commercial lily cultivars are resistant to Botrytis elliptica , Fusarium oxysporum , and LMoV (Lily mottle virus) [ 6 ].…”

“…However, when the callus is placed in suitable and controlled conditions, the differentiation of shoots, embryos, and roots can be achieved. Based on these culture systems, various studies on biochemical or cytological processes of growth attributed to cell enlargement, differentiation, and cell division have been conducted (Bakhshaie et al, 2016;Daneshvar, 2016a, 2016b;Jalali et al, 2012;Niazian et al, 2017). Moreover, various reactions of genotypes from one species to in vitro culture conditions have been observed regularly and has been explained to be due to variations in endogenous phytohormone levels or abilities to react differently to exogenously applied plant growth regulators (PGRs) (Bhojwani and Dantu, 2013;Hesami et al, 2017b).…”

“…Many methods such as micropropagation, seed germination, and regeneration from callus, embryo rescue, and cryopreservation are introduced for conserving rare and endangered plants' germplasms. In vitro methods for the propagation and preservation of geophytes have many advantages such as fast multiplication and relatively low costs, and thus they attract much more attention than traditional methods such as vegetative propagation (Bakhshaie et al, 2016;Daneshvar, 2016a, 2016b;Hesami et al, 2017aHesami et al, , 2017bJalali et al, 2012;Mohammadi-Dehcheshmeh et al, 2007, 2008.…”

“…In the United States, P. penetrans is considered one of the most damaging plant pathogens to Easter lily production (L. longiflorum cv. Nellie White), a floral crop with a pot plant wholesale value of approximately $26 million (Bakhsaie et al, 2016), whereas in South Korea lily production represents an annual value of $34 million (Kang et al, 2013). Disease symptoms on Easter lilies in the field are generally characterized by stunted shoot and root growth and chlorotic foliage.…”
